How does recruitment work at the IL Beta chapter?

Spring 2024 Recruitment will be fully in person and open to Freshmen, Sophomores, and first-semester Juniors. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend one of our three Info Sessions, where the Recruitment Team will introduce themselves, explain the components of rush, and answer questions. An application must be completed to indicate official interest in proceeding with Recruitment.

The following week, the potential new members must attend one round of Speed Recruitment. Two dates will be available to choose from. Those chosen to advance will receive an email invitation for PhiDE Social Night. Based on interactions and feedback from members, invite-only Interviews will be conducted as the final round of Recruitment.

What are recruitment events that PhiDE hosts?

There are four rounds of Recruitment. Applicants must attend all required events to be considered as potential new members for Phi Delta Epsilon.

  1. Info Session & Application: Info sessions are open to all prospective members. During this ~30 minute presentation given by the Recruitment Team, applicants will learn about the mission and opportunities of Phi Delta Epsilon. The logistical details of Recruitment, including the application, will be explained in greater detail. Three info sessions are available. The application (due Monday, February 5th) can be found in the PhiDE link.tree on our Instagram. (Attire: Casual)

  2. Speed Recruitment: Speed recruitment will take place over the span of two days. Potential new members are required to attend only one round of their choosing as indicated on their application. Speed recruitment consists of two main components: prompted rooms and traditional meet and greet. In the prompted rooms, potential new members will be asked to engage in conversations that specifically pertain to the purpose of that room. These rooms often reflect the various sectors of our Fraternity. The traditional meet and greet offers a more unstructured way for actives and potential new members to communicate. This is a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have for our current members. (Attire: Business Casual)

  3. Social Night: Social Night is an invite-only event. This round is considered to be the most casual and laidback with the primary focus being to get to know the potential new members on a friend-to-friend level. Our goal is to find individuals who are a good fit for our chapter culture and would gain a positive experience from their membership. (Attire: Casual)

  4. Interviews: Interviews are an invite-only event. Shortly after Social Night, applicants will receive an email notifying them as to whether or not they have been issued an invitation for an interview. Interviews are the final step in the recruitment process and designed for the PhiDE Leadership Team to learn about your experiences as a pre-medical student thus far and your aspirations for a future in medicine. Interviews are conducted in a professional manner and held over the span of one day. Conflict interviews can be made available for applicants with extenuating circumstances. (Attire: Business Professional)

Is there a minimum GPA requirement applicants must meet?

Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.2 to be considered. This requirement is not meant to discourage applicants. We believe in helping all pre-medical students at Illinois attain their goal of medical school admission. Because of this, we strongly encourage students with GPAs that do not meet this requirement to take the time they would have spent as an active PhiDE member to raise their GPA and apply again next semester.

If accepted, is it possible to join another social fraternity or sorority?

Of course! We have had (and will continue to have) members who are involved in both Phi Delta Epsilon and a social/cultural fraternity or sorority.

What is expected of new members during the semester?

The growth of our Fraternity depends on members who are dedicated to the organization. New members are expected to attend all new member events, where educational and team-building activities will take place. Additionally, new members are encouraged to get to know current members so our organization can function as a cohesive unit.

If I apply and do not get accepted, can I re-apply next semester?

Definitely! Unfortunately, we are not able to offer an acceptance to every interested individual in a given semester. However, we encourage potential members to re-apply, because we look for new members who express interest and commitment to the IL Beta chapter.
